Seek First: Aligning with God’s Kingdom

Seek First: Aligning with God’s Kingdom

Matthew 6:33 says, "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." This verse has been a guiding light for me as I navigate life’s twists and turns, especially when it comes to relationships and boundaries.

Seeking the kingdom first means making sure my life is aligned with God’s plan. It’s not just about reading the Bible or praying—it’s about actively listening to the Holy Spirit’s voice in every decision. It’s about pausing, seeking His guidance, and resting in the assurance that His way is always the best way, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Recently, I had to make a spirit-led decision with a friend I once considered close. I had confided in her about my struggles with my ex-husband—sharing some of my deepest pains and challenges. Twice, she brought up information about him I didn’t ask for, casually mentioning seeing him at church and who he was with. It felt like a fresh wound reopening each time.

I knew this wasn’t good for my peace, and it certainly wasn’t in alignment with the healing God is walking me through. So, I told her how I felt, asked her to stop, and began distancing myself. When she noticed the shift and asked if we were okay, I explained my feelings. I accepted her apology but made it clear that I wouldn’t be sharing personal details with her anymore.

That was hard for me. My instinct often tells me that spirit-led decisions should always be about unity and love. But I’ve learned that being spirit-led also means protecting the safety and purity of my heart. Sometimes, that means letting go of relationships that don’t foster peace.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t just guide us toward love for others; He guides us to care for ourselves so we can pour out safety, love, and genuine goodness into the lives of others. Protecting my peace and walking in alignment with God’s plan means creating space for the relationships and experiences that reflect His glory.

Seeking the kingdom first isn’t always easy. It requires hard decisions, clear boundaries, and trusting that God’s plan is unfolding—even when we don’t fully understand it. But in seeking His kingdom, we find not only His righteousness but also His peace, protection, and purpose.

Reflection Question:
What areas of your life need to be realigned with God’s plan so you can fully seek His kingdom first?
